Our goal is to support them in their endeavor as well as disseminate information. We welcome anyone not included in another group. Homestart is a non-denominational, Christian group, and we are open to anyone interested in home education. We offer information, ideas, support, field trip opportunities and lively fellowship.

When new members join, we ask for an introduction by the new member. Beyond that, when and how much a member posts is up to the member.

The LATT list welcomes everyone. Here is a definition of "everyone" (labels are indicated in parenthesis and are used only for the convenience of communication):

While disagreements may arise on a particular topic, or when the frustrations of life may intervene with our usual level-headedness, kindness ought always be foremost in a post or a reply to a post (even when unkindness is initiated). The larger community of LATT ought always be considered when a post is being made. LATT members come from a variety of different lifestyles, viewpoints, religions, and backgrounds. LATT is not a group of homogenous members. In order to respect the integrity of each member, the heterogeneity of the group ought always be considered. This is a support group for Buddhist homeschoolers in the New England region -- Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Vermont. Here we can talk about how we home-school with Buddhist ethics in mind. How do we live the 4 Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path in our culture?

When we are large enough, we will hold monthly or even weekly meetings, field trips, meditation circles and other neat homeschooling things. Eventually, we will also plan a yearly retreat for Buddhists and home school families in the New England region.

We are a group of homeschoolers who are interested in this lifestyle for some of the following reasons: preserving childhood, academic excellence, open-minded curriculum, simple and natural living, freedom from groupthought, etc. Most of us have not chosen this lifestyle in order to teach a specific religious curriculum. Please join us so that we can create a nurturing, natural-living, open-minded, culturally & spiritually diverse community for our children and families to flourish in! And together, we will explore all the treasures this area of Maine has to offer.

We are inspired by the works of John Holt, and the idea that curiosity is innate and that learning is a natural, seamless part of life. We believe that the school model of coercive learning is inefficient and potentially harmful, and does not need to be replicated in the home. Perhaps the simplest definition of unschooling is "not doing school", and the purpose of this group is to share ways that we are living and learning without school.

We are a real-life community as well as a cyber-group, so we do ask that members provide some basic personal information along with their request to join the group (full name, town, ages of children). This information will go to the moderator and will not be shared with the whole group. Upon joining the group, an introduction is always nice, and helps us feel more comfortable with each other.

Regarding posting etiquette, this is intended to be a friendly, supportive group. Members should feel free to post their own thoughts and experiences, but in a way that is respectful of other families' values and lifestyles.
